The improved Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, or PSLV-XL, is powered by lengthened strap-on boosters that have a 12 tonne propellant load. It is still equipped with its original configuration.At lift-off, the vehicle weighs 320 t (310 long tons; 350 short tons). To increase cargo capacity, the vehicle employs larger strap-on motors (PSOM-XL or S12).ISRO successfully tested the upgraded strap-on booster for the PSLV on December 29, 2005. When PSLV-C11 launched Chandrayaan-1, it was the first application of PSLV-XL. This type can carry 1,800 kg (4,000 lb) of cargo to Sun-synchronous orbit.
