What is a VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal)?

VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) is a satellite earth station with a small dish antenna, typically with a diameter of lower than 3.8 meters. VSATs can transmit and receive data, voice, and video signals over a communication satellite to the other remote ground stations (i.e., other VSATs) or master ground station (called "hub" station).

VSATs are ideal for providing internet services to remotely located business enterprises and consumers (e.g., homes) and also for military applications. Usually, the VSATs operate in the C, Ku, and Ka frequency bands with data rates between 4 Kbps to 16 Mbps.

VSATs are also transportable, which means they can be used to provide data, voice, and video signal service for vehicles, maritime, and aircraft. Other application areas of VSATs include remote education, emergency response & disaster relief, point of sale, and used as a backup for wired internet connection in banking & enterprises.
