Solar Array Simulator Helps Get JWST, Other Satellites Into Orbit

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has been making headlines. It launched on December 25, 2021, and reached its destination near Lagrange Point 2 on January 24, bringing its 6.5m-diameter primary mirror and four science instruments— the near-infrared camera, near-infrared spectrograph, midinfrared instrument (MIRI), and fine guidance sensor. In April, the instrument requiring the coldest operating conditions—the MIRI—reached its operating temperature of less than 7 Kelvin with help from an electrically powered cryocooler. NASA entered the final phase of commissioning the telescope’s science instruments in May. Still to come is a thermal-stability test as the telescope mirrors and other instruments cool to their final operating temperature of about 45 Kelvin in anticipation of the beginning of scientific operations in the summer of 2022. The JWST is high-profile, but just one of many satellites that launch annually and that serve applications ranging from communications to military reconnaissance. According to Fortune Business Insights, 107 medium and large satellites were manufactured globally in 2018. That number dropped precipitously to 37 in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the firm sees the situation improving, with the global market for medium and large satellites expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.20% to reach $14.98 billion in 2028.
