INSAT-1A was India's first satellite in the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) series that was launched by ISRO in collaboration with US Space Agency NASA on 10th April 1982. The mission was carried out on Delta-3914 spacecraft and has a mass of 1152 Kg.
INSAT-1A was a multipurpose communication and meteorology satellite aimed at providing telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorological, and search and rescue services. It was intended to improve telecommunications infrastructure across India, enhance weather forecasting capabilities, and support disaster management efforts. INSAT-1A was equipped with C-band and Extended C-band transponders for telecommunications and broadcasting services. It carried meteorological instruments such as a Very High-Resolution Radiometer (VHRR) for weather monitoring and forecasting. This satellite was abandoned in September 1983 when its attitude control propellant was exhausted.
