Rakon Introduces Rad-Hard Application Specific Integrated Circuit for Space Oscillators

Rakon, a global leader in frequency control and timing solutions, has introduced its groundbreaking MercuryR™ Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC), designed to withstand the extreme radiation conditions found in space. This innovative ASIC, developed in-house, boasts a total-ionizing-dose (TID) resistance of up to 100kRAD, marking a significant advancement in the field of space-grade oscillators. With the introduction of MercuryR, Rakon is set to revolutionize the production of miniature Space Oven-Controlled Crystal Oscillators (OCXOs) for both Traditional Space and NewSpace applications.

The new ASIC allows for the creation of smaller, more cost-effective oscillators with enhanced frequency stability—ranging from +/-100ppb to just a few ppb over temperature. Additionally, the oscillators demonstrate improved shock and vibration resistance, reduced Bill of Materials (BoM), and increased reliability. The MercuryR-based IC-OCXOs also feature low phase noise, low power consumption, and are housed in a hermetically sealed package, ensuring consistent performance in both atmospheric and vacuum conditions.

Sinan Altug, CEO of Rakon, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, "Our MercuryR ASIC is a testament to Rakon's ability to innovate and leverage expertise across industries. The Space IC-OCXO will be a game-changer for both the Traditional Space and NewSpace industries, which currently rely on more complex and expensive discrete oscillators."

The first products incorporating the MercuryR ASIC include the RK508NS (NewSpace), with Engineering Models and Flight Models now available, and the RK508HR (HiRel), which is expected to be qualified by 2025.

Rakon has a rich history of providing cutting-edge solutions for the rapidly growing NewSpace and Low Earth Orbit satellite sectors. The company is also a trusted partner of leading space agencies such as NASA, ISRO, and ESA, contributing to landmark missions, including ISRO's recent lunar exploration of the Moon's South Pole.
