Viasat Collaborates with Reticulate Micro to Develop Satellite Video Compression Technology

Viasat, Inc., a global company in satellite communications, and Reticulate Micro, Inc., a defense tech company redefining resilient communications, announced that Reticulate has joined Viasat’s ELEVATE program to work with the satellite communications provider on expanding the use of its VAST video technology

Reticulate Micro is a commercial and defense software technology company that delivers resilient communications at the network edge. Its robust solutions enable ground intelligence to support first responders, military operations, critical infrastructure, and enterprise users, providing reliable and secure communications in challenging and low-bandwidth environments.

Reticulate brings its VAST video encoding and compression platform as a new solution to the ELEVATE marketplace. VAST is an innovative video encoding and compression platform optimized for minimal bandwidth and ultra-low latency, ideal for tactical scenarios and edge networks. By utilizing dynamic resolution and AI-driven rate control, VAST can stream HD video at under 50 kbps, all while maintaining clarity.

In the field, this allows the defense industry to rely on secure tactical video streaming and communication via satellite, while allowing aid and NGO workers to provide reliable voice, data and video transmission to co-ordinate disaster response efforts. The platform can also be used for media to report footage from remote areas, and for utilities and major infrastructure firms which require video monitoring and security.

As a new ELEVATE partner, Reticulate Micro will have access to Viasat’s growing partner ecosystem - providing access to new capabilities and collaboration with other organizations involved in satellite connectivity and IoT. Viasat will also provide technical support and commercial frameworks to enable Reticulate to accelerate its growth in new markets.

James Grisbrook, Senior Director, Marketing and Communications, said: “Demand for video streaming over our satellite is growing, as organizations increasingly look for remote monitoring to keep their sites – and more importantly their people - safe and secure. We are excited to welcome Reticulate Micro to the program so they can work with other members of the ecosystem already innovating in this area.”

Paul Scardino, Reticulate Micro’s EVP Sales and CSO, said: “We are extremely pleased to join the ELEVATE program. Coupled with Viasat’s L-band network, our VAST solution will allow users to stream high-definition video in austere environments where it was previously very challenging. Furthermore, it integrates smoothly with existing infrastructure to minimize deployment time and costs while also maximizing operational efficiency on Viasat’s high-throughput network.”
