D-Orbit and Planetek Partners to Expand Capabilities in Advanced Space Technologies

D-Orbit, a global leader in space logistics and orbital transportation, and Planetek Group, a distinguished player in Earth Observation (EO), geospatial analytics, and mission software, announces a strategic business combination during an event held at the Sala degli Arazzi of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, in the presence of Minister Adolfo Urso.

D-Orbit and Planetek, while exploring new innovative business models and implementing synergies, will retain their operational autonomy, ensuring the continuation of their successful strategies and operations. This milestone enables both companies to integrate new capabilities in cloud-based space applications, AI-powered data processing in orbit, and real-time data services

Over the years, D-Orbit and Planetek have collaborated on multiple initiatives, most recently deploying the first mission of AI-eXpress, an innovative technology leveraging artificial intelligence and blockchain technology to enhance satellite reactivity and enable low-latency analytics transmission. The use of AI technology in orbit enables satellites to perform autonomous decisions, like identifying useful data or adjusting their operations in real time, rather than waiting for instructions from Earth. At the same time, blockchain ensures the information they collect is securely stored and shared, making space-based data more reliable and accessible.

This operation highlights D-Orbit’s belief in the strategic value of space cloud computing services and in their potential impact on a broad range of sectors. Planetek’s extensive expertise in Earth Observation, will further enhance D-Orbit’s ability to develop and implement cutting-edge solutions to process and analyze data directly in space, rather than relying solely on ground-based infrastructure, redefining how satellite data is collected, managed, and delivered in near real-time.

We have been working on this milestone, combining D-Orbit and Planetek, for a long time,” said Luca Rossettini, CEO of D-Orbit. “By combining our strengths, we are not only expanding our technological reach but also reinforcing our commitment to making space more accessible and sustainable to improve life on Earth. Our shared values, centered on the idea of putting people first, are at the heart of this collaboration, ensuring that innovation is driven by a strong, people-centric culture that empowers talent and fosters long-term success.”

“Together, D-Orbit and Planetek aim to redefine how space-based information is accessed, analyzed, and applied to solve global challenges, from environmental monitoring and urban planning to national security and disaster response,” said Giovanni Sylos Labini, CEO of Planetek Italia

“This combination brings significant new perspectives for Planetek Hellas and reinforces our position as a leading space player in Greece, covering the entire value chain from upstream to downstream,” declared Stelios Bollanos, CEO of Planetek Hellas

“Consolidating space industry and service-oriented capabilities is more crucial than ever. With D-Orbit and Planetek joining forces, we are elevating this consolidation to new heights. Together, we will provide our customers with a one-stop shop for in-orbit servicing and big data management in space, while introducing a new approach to partnerships. This will benefit all our stakeholders,” commented D-Orbit Group’s Chairwoman Simonetta Di Pippo. Through this operation, D-Orbit acquired 100% of Planetek’s shares, making Planetek shareholders part of D-Orbit’s shareholder base. The current organization will remain unchanged to ensure business continuity.

D-Orbit operates globally, with offices in Italy, Portugal, UK, Greece, and the US. Planetek extends its reach with two spin-off companies, GAP s.r.l. and GEO-K s.r.l., and its well-established branch in Greece, Planetek Hellas. Together, the two companies will expand their portfolio in a way that benefits the entire ecosystem, from government, security, commercial, and environmental sectors to the broader space community.
