Axelspace Corporation, a leading microsatellite company committed to making “Space within Your Reach,” has entered into a service agreement with JAXA to prove the AxelLiner Laboratory in-orbit demonstration service. In-orbit demonstration(IOD) refers to the process of launching satellite components and mission payloads into space and verifying their performance in the orbital environment. These components may include critical subsystems essential to satellite operations, as well as mission equipment tailored to specific satellite applications and objectives.
Space presents an extremely harsh environment for hardware, exposing components and equipment to severe launch vibrations as well as extreme temperature fluctuations, radiation and vacuum conditions. As a result, space-grade components and equipment are generally expected to have a proven track record of successful operation in orbit, known as flight heritage. While demand for IOD continues to grow, opportunities to conduct such demonstrations remain limited. In many cases, several years are required from project selection to launch, making timely validation a significant challenge.
Against this backdrop, government-led initiatives, including Japan’s Space Strategy Fund, have identified the development of a domestic satellite supply chain as a key priority in Japan. As a result, expectations are increasing for environments that enable the rapid IOD of satellite components developed. To address this need, Axelspace offers AL Lab, a service dedicated to the IOD of space equipment. Leveraging the short development cycles and scalable mass-production capabilities of the AxelLiner business, AL Lab enables customers to quickly validate components and equipment in the space environment.
Under this agreement, Axelspace plans to provide its AL Lab service for approximately 4 years, from FY2026 through the completion of the demonstration phase, in support of JAXA’s basic research on high-mobility electric propulsion systems for spacecraft. Moving forward, Axelspace will continue to empower customers’ space missions worldwide through the provision of a broad range of space services, including satellite bus systems.
