The Power Subsystem from Stellar Exploration is a Satellite Electrical Power System developed to provide scalable power generation, storage and distribution for small satellite missions. Built with a modular architecture that eliminates single-point failures, it utilizes independent battery cell strings to improve mission reliability and operational resilience. The subsystem offers adjustable energy storage capacity from 70 Wh per module up to 3 kWh with 40 modules, while supporting peak power delivery of up to 10 kW at 250 W per module for high-demand payload applications.
This electrical power subsystem operates with a nominal unregulated 28 V bus voltage, with regulated output available as an option for mission-specific requirements. It is capable of supporting operational lifetimes of 3 to 5 years or up to 30,000 cycles depending on usage conditions. The system integrates direct solar panel interfacing for efficient charging control, while each cell includes dedicated charge, balance and discharge management functionality. Integrated protection mechanisms safeguard against overcurrent, overcharge, excessive discharge and over-temperature conditions. An embedded controller manages power distribution through RS-422 or CAN telemetry interfaces and incorporates a hardware watchdog timer for reset and recovery operations.
Optimized for long-duration space missions, the subsystem combines high peak power density of approximately 500 W/kg with robust thermal and mechanical packaging for improved mass efficiency, stiffness and heat management. Its integrated architecture simplifies harnessing, reduces touch labor and accelerates spacecraft integration timelines. Proven in orbit with multiple deployed systems, the Power Subsystem is ideal for SAR payloads, distributed satellite power networks and smallsat missions requiring reliable multi-year power management and intelligent energy distribution.
